From Paris to London: A Migrant Woman’s Poetic Path

Fern Jean-Joseph, a Paris-born orthodontist and aesthetic practitioner, has built a second life in London — one where poetry, art, and cross-cultural creativity intertwine

When Fern Jean-Joseph moved from Paris to London 20 years ago, she carried more than professional credentials. An orthodontist and aesthetic practitioner, she rebuilt her career in a new country while nurturing a lifelong passion: writing haiku poetry.

That passion reached a milestone in 2025, with the publication of her bilingual poetry collection La Vie en 3 Lignes / Life in 3 Lines. Written in both French and English, the collection captures the brevity and beauty of human experience through the timeless Japanese form. The book also set the stage for a distinctive artistic event this autumn.

Poetry Meets Visual Art – A Japanese-inspired celebration

On 25 September in South Kensington, London, Fern will host an immersive evening that blends literature and visual art. The event will showcase sumi-e ink paintings by renowned Japanese artist Harumi Toshei Kobayashi, as well as chigiri-e, a delicate Japanese paper collage technique practised by Fern herself. Guests will also experience live ikebana floral arrangements, haiku readings, and a sensory atmosphere complete with visual installations and sparkling sake.

For Fern, it is more than an exhibition:

Poetry, art, and aesthetics come together to invite presence, contemplation, and gentle connection. It’s not just a reading; it’s an experience.

Fern’s journey embodies creative reinvention. From the precision of science to the meditative rhythm of poetry, she has forged a life where profession and passion coexist. Her work highlights the intersections of culture and identity: French–British haiku dialogue with Japanese artistic traditions, creating a shared space for reflection and cross-cultural beauty.

The event is also a response to a restless world. It offers an evening of slowness, aesthetic calm, and community — an invitation to pause and connect.

With a background in science and a career in healthcare, Fern has always nurtured a deep passion for the arts, exploring a multi-sensory approach to haiku, blending poetry with short videos that evoke both sight and sound.

Since 2017, she has shared her poetic snapshots on Instagram. Her new collection, Life in 3 Lines (originally La Vie en 3 Lignes), illustrated by Tokyo-based artist Harumi Tohsei Kobayashi, captures the essence of human emotion through the timeless simplicity of haiku; a journey where each word pulses with quiet intensity.

The event invites guests into a serene, multi-sensory experience—an artistic moment of grace designed to stir reflection and emotion.
