Brazilian Immigrant Women’s Lives Told Through a Powerful New Collection

Founded by Brazilian author Claudia Canto, Riqueza Descoberta Group amplifies Brazilian migrant women’s voices through literary collections and cultural exchanges across Portugal and beyond.

It was with butterflies in her stomach that Claudia Canto, writer, speaker, and cultural activist, left Cidade Tiradentes, on the outskirts of São Paulo, to begin her long-awaited literary tour and celebrate the Riqueza Descoberta Group’s (Discovered Wealth’s Group) partnership in Portugal.

What once seemed like a distant dream has now become a reality: a journey to share her story of resilience and empowerment with Brazilian women who, like her, are striving to build new horizons in foreign lands. The journey began in Lisbon, where Grupo Riqueza Descoberta has established a new address. The partnership with writer and activist Lau Nascimento aims not only to foster the exchange of ideas but also to create a true literary network among Brazilian immigrants who often feel isolated in an unfamiliar culture.

The partnership between Claudia Canto and Lau Nascimento unites two women from similar backgrounds, both hailing from the São Paulo peripheries, who are now working in Portugal with a mission to transform realities through literature and expand social initiatives in the communities where they originated. Born in São Paulo, Claudia Canto brings with her the strength of her experiences in Cidade Tiradentes, where the Riqueza Descoberta Group was founded—an initiative focused on promoting equality, social inclusion, and caring for abandoned dogs.

In Portugal, she extends these missions by inviting immigrants to share their own stories of struggle, resilience, and triumph. Lau Nascimento, a native of the outskirts of Campinas and someone who intimately understands the challenges of immigration, complements Claudia’s efforts with her own unique perspective. Together, they embody the strength of unity among women who recognise themselves in the fight for a common goal: a fairer and more inclusive society.

It is through this partnership, uniting the stories of women from diverse walks of life, that Claudia Canto’s literary tour takes shape. Connecting Brazil and Portugal, the initiative fosters an exchange of knowledge that transcends the written word and touches the hearts of all who participate.

Crossing Borders and Creating Literary Connections: Launches in Portugal and Italy with a Lecture in Angola

Claudia’s literary journey continues with significant events scheduled across different countries. The launch of the Italian version of her book debut book “Death to the Brushes” in Italy, held in the Sala Sicurezza of the Palazzo Comunale, offered a unique opportunity to share her story with the Italian public and deepen cultural connections. With the support of writer Renato Marchese, the translator of the book, Claudia presented Italians with a powerful narrative of her journey of resilience and triumph, expanding her influence.

At the Casa do Brasil in Lisbon, the launch of the book ‘Entrelinhas’ provided a welcoming space for Brazilian immigrant women to come together, inspiring them to share their own stories of struggle and achievement.

The event was a celebration of diversity and an opportunity to build a support network for Brazilian women seeking recognition and inclusion in foreign lands. In Angola, Claudia delivered the lecture “Riqueza Descoberta,” inspiring young Angolans with her life story. This gathering marks the beginning of a project that Claudia Canto plans to develop in Angola with the support of UEPA (University of Professional Education of Angola), aiming to strengthen cultural ties and promote social inclusion through literature.

Each event on this literary tour reaffirmed Claudia’s dedication to immigrant inclusion. In every country, her story and that of the Riqueza Descoberta Group resonate with the strength of resilience and hope for a fairer, more equal future.

To close the tour on a high note, Claudia and Lau Nascimento were received by the Brazilian ambassador, Raimundo Carreiro, and had the honour of seeing the book presented to the President of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa—a significant milestone recognizing their careers and cultural contributions.

Excitingly, the selection process for the second edition of the ‘Entrelinhas – Histórias de Mulheres’ collection is now open.
